CLASSES OF BASE OILS. Base oils are classified by the Ameri- can Petroleum Institute into five groups (see Figure 1) according to their ingre- dients and performance characteristics. Group I base oil stocks contain greater than 0.03% sulfur, less than 90% saturates and have a VI ranging from 80-119. New emission legislation is a driver for using better base oils. The latest catalytic converter technologies allow for lower impurity levels, and therefore, better engine lubricants are needed. Shell announced today the creation of the first-of-its kind base oil made from natural gas, the cleanest burning fossil fuel. It is called Shell PurePlus(TM) Technology, a patented process of converting natural gas into a clear base oil, which is the main component of motor oils. Pearl GTL is the crown jewel in the Shell-Qatar Petroleum partnership and one of the most complex and challenging energy projects ever commissioned. It is the world’s largest source of gas-to-liquids (GTL) products. Shell GTL base oils enable motor oil formulations to have NOACK volatilities of 10% and lower. Typically, Group II and other Group III base oils cannot achieve such low volatilities ( Fig. 6 ). Low-volatility oils help reduce the need to “top up” as a result of lower evaporative losses and reduced oil consumption. Shell GTL Drilling Base Fluids under the brand Shell GTL Saraline and Shell GTL Sarapar are made of a synthetic drilling base fluid with a low viscosity, a high flash point, high biodegradability and low toxicity.
